We use more and more electronic and electrical equipment as an essential part of our modern working environment. Equipment which, produces unwanted heat into the room.

As well as having an effect on the people operating the equipment, the heat will eventually upset the equipment itself.

Heat and humidity surrounding sensitive electronic components can affect calibration and accuracy.

Some equipment manufacturers fit safety switches to close down the equipment if the room temperature rises above a set level. So the first sign you get that something is wrong is when the equipment stops - and in a computer server room this is catastrophic.

REMEMBER EQUIPMENT, UNLIKE PEOPLE DOES NOT SHOW ANY SIGNS OF DISCOMFORT - IT JUST SUDDENLY DIES ON YOU.

An important item to discuss with your designer is just how essential to your business operation - what would happen if the air conditioning failed?

If it is essential, then consider installing two systems instead of one. For example if your Data Room needs 10 kilowatts of cooling, install two 5 kilowatt systems instead of one 10 kilowatt system. The price will be slightly higher but the peace of mind value is worth the extra.
